Little Dragon Interview + Giveaway

January 23, 2011

We’re less than a week away from the much anticipated Little Dragon show at The Electric Pickle this Friday 1.28.11 here in Miami.  As you may have noticed, it’s an event we’ve been pushing hard since Little Dragon is one of our favorite contemporary bands.  Nightdrive and The Electric Pickle have been working together on this show for months now and can’t wait to see it all come to fruition.

This Swedish foursome brings a unique brand of electronic pop that doesn’t sound like it was inspired by a Lisa Frank Trapper Keeper.  Instead you’ll hear front woman Yukimi Nagano crooning jazzy riffs over structurally sophisticated R&B beats.  The diversity among their songs speaks to their ability to translate their “sound” into different tempos, beats, or genres.  Whether it be the slow and sweet ballad of Wink or the upbeat electro dance anthem like My Step, Little Dragon’s music has the artistic integrity to cut through the mass of short-lived buzz bands that we’re bombarded with on a daily basis.

So with the show fast approaching, we have a few treats for you here on the Nightdrive blog.  The first is an exclusive interview granted to us by Little Dragon for your reading pleasure.  The second is a ticket give-away for the show this coming Friday (see below interview).  Once again, all you have to do is email us the answer to the following question to  The 20th correct email we get will be our winner!  Good luck and god speed…

ND: Have you guys been to Miami before? If so what was your favorite part about it? If not what have you heard about it and what are you looking forward to?

LD: We have never been there. Always wanted to go, been to Florida a couple times though. What we’ve here’d about Miami… well I guess we learned everything we need to know from Miami Vice right?

ND: Word has it the next Little Dragon album is due out sometime this spring? Can you tell us about any new experiences or new interests that may end up influencing these future recordings?

LD: Yes spring is what we’re aiming for! Its going be different from Machine Dreams in some ways a little bit less electrontic but still experimental still pop songs sweet n sour but yummy

ND: Yukimi, you’ve been in other bands like ‘Koop’ where the sound and vocal stylings are obviously different, what other projects (if any) are you contributing to right now and what do these differences in sounds and genre represent to you?

LD: Koop was decades ago. Yea I used sing and the guys would play in different projects in the past but it was just to get by and pay the rent. Any collaborations that we do these days are all in the name of Little Dragon and it ha sto feel right. We have met so many great artist and love sharing ideas if the vibe is there. Loved working with Gorillaz that was a blast.

ND: (Rest of band) Are any of you guys contributing to other side projects? Do you guys collaborate with other musicians on a general basis?

LD: The guys are really productive with making beats n ideas so theres always open to give beats/songs that don’t fit LittleDragon to people.

ND: If you (all) could hypothetically pick any artist from any time and place (dead or alive) to work on a song with, who would you pick and why?

LD:  Prince, because we love him

ND: Working with Gorillaz is a pretty big deal, how did the collaboration come about and what are some of the things you took away from this amazing experience?

LD: Damon’s wife used to listen to our first album at home and thats how he learned about us. He invited us to his studio in London and we just jammed out came up with two songs and they ended up on the album.

ND: Off the top of your head, any memorable moments while on a “tour of the world” with those guys?

LD: So many Its all blurry…a lot great after parties with Maseo from DeLaSoul djing. Sharing the bus with Bobby Womack and listening to some of the most amazing stories about his life.

ND: What’s been the best environment for you to perform in overall? Favorite show, it’s setting, and why?

LD: We love all kinds of places If the sound is alright and people are up for dancing any hole in the wall can feel perfect.
