ARP

September 15, 2010

Multi-media soundscapes, psychedelic film, dreamy effects are just a few terms that can describe the live show created by ARP (aka Alexis Georgopoulos/Q&A). As most already know Arp will be playing select dates across the south (including Miami) with non other than Caribou, in support of “The Soft Wave”, ARP’s sophomore album out now on Smalltown Supersound. ARP plays a small collection of vintage synthesizers, guitar and E bow. Played as a continuous 40-minute stream, the set draws heavily on material from the record and some improvisations. To top it off Georgopoulos is accompanied by a lush, psychedelic film made specifically for the live show by himself and filmmaker Paul Clipson. The film is said to, “take you to distant, epic environments and triggers enigmatic memories”. Sounds interesting enough but don’t take my word for it…

“Mr. Georgopoulos creates enormous sound structures that, as they slowly unfold, become essays on scale. The two-part, nine-minute ‘Pastoral Symphony’ begins with a simple keyboard pattern that repeats like a little engine as a star of analog synthesizers  and over driven electric guitar goes loudly supernova all around it; the explosion then implodes, another reassuring bass line emerges, and order is restored.”Ben Sisario, The New York Times
