Anoraak

May 25, 2010

Anoraak burst onto the scene as a reaction to the French “maximalist” electro house craze that swept the world like a distorted punch in the face circa 2008.  Along with other Valerie Collective members Minitel Rose, Russ Chimes, College, Maethelvin and The Outrunners, Anoraak presented a more sophisticated style with more subdued beats, minimalist structure and some sweet retro-sounding synth waves.  Perhaps I was partial because it brought be back to happier times watching MacGyver reruns on USA. Also, the Valerie aesthetic (with the help of The Zonders) seemed appropriate for the Miami nightlife.  Valerie quickly built an image for themselves as a cool alternative in French electronic music and came to be the early pioneers of what is now called ‘dreamwave.’  Consider it the neon yin to Ed Banger’s yang.

Of all the Valerie crew Anoraak holds a special place in my heart.  His first EP, Nightdrive With You is, afterall, the inspiration for a certain project that’s come a long way.  So hop in your red testarossa, bump these free tracks, rev the engine and cruise over the MacArthur Causeway….. preferably at night.

Special thanks to Anoraak for sending us what appears to be an exclusive track off his debut album coming out August 30th, 2010 on Naive.
