The Budos Band

May 24, 2010

I was sitting at my favorite lunch spot, The Lost & Found Saloon a few months back when I became conscious of the most amazing grooves resonating from their hi-fi. I turned to my friend working the bar and inquired about this sonic delicacy. She grinned before looking up from her side work (as if she was about to bestow upon me the secrets of the universe) and answered “The Budos Band.” She then shrugged and added “It’s white boy afrobeat.” Well then, these white boys can throw down!

From Staten Island and signed to Daptone Records, home of the lovely Sharon Jones, this twelve piece (yes, TWELVE piece!) offers nothing but pure jams. Their horn section will lay you flat on your ass and their percussion will make you move. Try closing your eyes and pretending you’re in a car chase through a sandy Tunisian bazaar in the ’70s. That’s what I do. It works.
