Blue Hawaii

July 7, 2010

Raphaelle Standell-Preston was born in Calgary, Alberta, and Alexander Cowan is from Vancouver, BC. They met in Montreal while Alex was running a DIY loft venue called Lab Synthese, and Raph’s amazing band, Braids, played there. They got along really well and are now inseparable; both want to make pop music but tastefully, and share a vast love for ambient music, atmospheres, feeling and friendship.

Alex tells NIGHTDRIVE:

Blue Hawaii is AGOR and RA and we are a boy and a girl from west to east coast CANADA. We have been around less than a year, and have released one album, which you should download below. We are very excited about this project.

We come from Montreal, a place where half the year it becomes dark very early. Everyone bundles up in huge coats and spends a lot of time indoors. Maybe it’s like the opposite of Miami in the summer, when you got to go inside and hit A/C?  Anyways this winter Raphaelle and I decided to explore the tropics, coming back and recording Blooming Summer in the snowy Canadian spring. It sounds like that too.

We did have this one amazing night in the Ft-lauderdale/Broward county area, on our way back from Guatemala. We saw preserved baby sharks in Wings, then met a friendly burnout on the bus who told us “you know once i told Jerry Garcia he was far out, man, but you know what he said back?…no dude…far iiin”  We ate pizza, it was great.

Now Blue Hawaii is working on a new recording that should be out in Fall, hopefully on vinyl: a simpler, more stripped down sound — kind of the most elemental parts of our dreamy and lushful wishes. It will be very freeing to play live, not having to trigger a million samples, but to move just as far. We’ve got our bros in Orlando, FL: TONSTARTSSBANDHT.  Also check out our label-mates who make most excellent music (http://www.arbutusrecords.com).
